What is Dussehra / Dasahara ?, Why do we celebrate the Dussehra :
Dussehra, аlѕо knоwn as “Vijayadashmi”, “Dasahara”, “Durga Pooja” it is a one of the important Indіаn fеѕtіvаl сеlеbrаtеd on thе tеnth dау of Aѕhvіn month ассоrdіng to the Hіndu calendar.
Dussehra commonly celebrated for kіllіng оf Rаvаnа bу Lord Rаmа & kіllіng оf dеmоn Mahishasur bу Gоddеѕѕ Durgа. In short “victory of good over evil”.

Here is how Dussehra is celebrated in different parts of India.
Dashera Festival in North India :
Ramlila is the main attraction of celebrating Dussehra in the northern part of India, where the drama of Ramayana are enacted to display various leela (steps of life) of Lord Rama. The scenes that go to the fourteen years of Ram’s exile are enforced, Bharat Milap where Rama is his brother Bharat, Sita Haran (kidnapping of Sita by Ravana), Ravan’s destruction, Ram’s return, Lakshman and Sita to Ayodhya after fourteen Years of exile, all are implemented and performed in Ramlila.
Dussehra festival in south India :
Dussehra is a major festival in south India and it is celebrated with great enthusiasm, joy and happiness. Nine days before Dussehra, Goddess Durga is equally divided for worshiping three forms of Durga, that is, the small statues known as Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati ‘Bommai Kolu’ are placed on artificial steps and Beautifully decorated with flowers, lamps and ornaments. On the day of Dussehra, Bommai Kollu is gravely taken down as a large procession. Saraswati is worshiped and the day is considered very auspicious for the education of the beginning, Vidya Arambh Mysore festival procession is organized where large number of beautified elephants are taken to the city’s bright streets. Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbharan are burnt in the grip. The Mysore Castle has been published during the festivals of Dussehra.
Dussehra Festival in East India :
In eastern states of India and especially in West Bengal, Dussehra is celebrated on the grand Mahishasur as the victory of Goddess Durga. It is a symbol of Durga Puja’s last ten days festival. On Dussehra, idols of Mata Durga are ritually converged by the devotees in nearby river or lake. It is known as ‘Vishrajan’ in Orissa, people also burn the statues of Ravana.
Dussehra festival in western India:
Dussehra is celebrated with great fun and enthusiasm in the western part of India. After a great procession, statues of goddess Durga are immersed in water. People go to their friends and relatives and exchange sweets. The apta tree is worshiped and its leaves are exchanged which is considered to be auspicious symbol. People start new ventures on this auspicious day. People decorate their homes with colorful Rangoli. Dresses devotional songs are given to women in their best dress, regional dances are performed and the festival continues on the entire ten days of the night.
